Mooresville's Brawley School Road Widening and Development Update

Mayhew Promenade Development in Mooresville

Anyone who lives in Mooresville down Brawley School Road knows that changes seem to be happening literally every day!  Not only are the utility poles being installed in their new locations well inside many homes' and businesses' front yards requiring myriad trees to be removed, but more businesses have also moved since my last update and quite a few homes are now vacated and have bright red numbers on them.

Lake Norman's Troutman NC is a real estate hot spot!

The small Town of Troutman, NC which sits along the northeastern banks of Lake Norman has been discovered in a very big way.  As I mentioned in my previous article, where Crescent Homes goes so goes the focus of growth around Lake Norman.  In October of last year, Crescent Homes opened sales at their latest housing development, Falls Cove, a 900-home, high-end subdivision in Troutman.

Map of Troutman

Located just north of Mooresville along Lake Norman between exit 42 and 45 on the I-77, Troutman is considered to be a reasonable commuting distance to not just Charlotte but Greensboro and Winston Salem.  It truly is at the very center of our rapidly growing economic region.

Brawley School Road Widening has begun!

Brawley_1.jpg

It started a few weeks ago when tree crews were out cutting down and clearing sections along parts of Brawley School Rd.

At first I wasn't sure what was happening so I talked with a few of the businesses along Brawley School Road.  Medicap Pharmacy told me they had to be in their new location on Stutts Road by the second week in December and Cheyl Lynn's Dry Cleaners began construction to remove the front half of their building and reconfigure their existing building so that their business can stay where it is.

Booming Lake Norman Growth; The Growing Dilemma

Ice Bucket 2_1.jpg

Yesterday was a perfect day to be out on Lake Norman.  My husband and I decided to go north as far as we could, touring the coastline clear up the Catawba River where civilization is hardly evident.  I imagine this is what all of Lake Norman used to look like.  Along the way we saw lot after lot of exposed, red dirt construction sites.

Since its completion in 1963, Lake Norman has been a magnet for abundant development, from million-dollar mansions and sprawling apartment complexes to shopping malls and public parks.  Along the way, it has suffered its share of growing pains.  Today, all four counties and the towns that encompass Lake Norman are independently and jointly focusing on curbing growth or at the very least controlling and directing it.  Here is a summary of who has oversight of what, some of the most notable efforts to deal with our growth and links to the various town and county websites for more detailed information:

Is Lake Norman's The Point a Victim of Brawley School Traffic?

I live down Brawley School Road in one of the most beautiful areas I have ever seen.  Yet, if I tell this to a local, I will get a knowing, sympathetic nod  as if to say, '"you poor thing, I am so sorry".  And, if they too live down Brawley School Rd,  we will immediately share war stories about the longest time it has taken us to get to the I-77 and what we each  think of the latest efforts for a building moratorium.  Now, I only live about a third of the way down what we all refer to as the "longest cul-de-sac in the world" so it doesn't take me more than 20 minutes to travel my 2.7 miles to Williamson Rd. during rush hour.   Those who live at the very end of our 8-mile peninsula have much better horror stories.  I know one high school student who leaves at 6:30a.m. to get to school by 8:30a.m.  which is about 14 miles away.
